PYP 3 How the world works

PYP 3

How the world works

PYP 3 students in action to answer some of the questions!

What do you have to do for each object to work? What force do you use? What happens to the object When do you use that force? Does it change? How? Have you tried other methods/forces? What happens?

Children played with tops.

What ramps make the cars go further? Why did this one go further? What happens to the objects in this one?

Children tested car speed on the ramps.

What is making your airplane fly/not fly? Which one is flying farthest? Why? Why do you think? Have you tried other ways of shaping your airplane? Which ways did you find out work best? Why do you think?

Children tested their paper airplanes.

What happens? With which objects can you see a difference? What happens when you throw the open and the crumpled piece of paper? Which one hits the ground first? Why did one fall faster than the other one? Why was it different with these objects?

Checking our gravity and air resistance with a paper ball and a flat paper.

Next, they tested with a playdough ball.

Children made parachutes and tested them outside.

Children explored air resistance by making a balloon and a ping-pong ball "float" with a hairdryer.

Children explored air pressure by attaching a full balloon to a straw in a string and letting it go.

Children explored pushing and pulling.

Children tested magnetism with paper clips.

Unit 6 - "Forces act upon the natural world causing reactions"

Our last Unit of Inquiry has started for PYP 3!

In this Unit we are investigating different types of
forces and the action-reaction they cause.

Children are very excited with this Unit, experimenting and finding forces in everyday life, objects and simple machinery.

We are looking into push and pullfriction, gravity, air resistance, magnets, etc.

We are encouraging children to bring toys, utensils or simple machinery that use any of these types of forces, and bring them to class for show and tell and/or to leave on our interest  table for the course of the Unit.

Stay tuned for future posts about the children's inquiries and discoveries!

PYP 3 - How We Express Ourselves

PYP 3

How We Express Ourselves

Children reflected, chose and planned their presentation about different forms of Art they know and they would like to represent their message, idea or feeling. Next, they explained to the class which feeling they expressed through and why.

Poetry

Poetry and painting

Dance

Drawing

Painting

Sculpture

Message with graffiti

As part of their past Unit of Inquiry PYP 3 have looked at how to communicate ideas, feelings and experiences through visual art. Students were asked to consider what colours they felt were cold and what colours they felt were warm or hot. After selecting a colour to represent a cold or warm feeling they applied the watercolour paint to paper.
Mr Concagh explained to PYP 3 students how watercolour paint could be applied to the surface of paper by using more water than paint itself. This procedure allowed the paint to spread much more than normal paint and create a series of different tones.

Mr. Concagh

"We have also been learning about Figurative and Abstract art. PYP 3 Beta experimented painting their own abstract work and also learned how to sketch some still art. They were then able to reflect about their work and compare both art styles."
